Diggers Rest: Body found in burnt-out car was of Footscray man

Police have identified the body found in a burnt-out car at Diggers Rest last Friday as that of Footscray man Kenan Balikel.

On Friday, the 42-year-old’s charred remains were found in the burnt-out car on the Bulla-Diggers Rest Road at 12.20am.

The 42-year-old was discovered in the boot of his unregistered grey 2006 Peugeot 407 wagon at 12.20am.

The father-of-five was last seen at a factory in Freight Road, Tullamarine, about 3pm on Thursday, October 30.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey, of the homicide squad, said police were looking for people who made contact with Mr Balikel on Thursday.

“We would like to piece together Mr Balikel’s movements after about 3pm last Thursday,” he said.

Mr Balikel drove a 2010 white Mercedes Sprinter van to Tullamarine on Thursday afternoon where he had his car repaired. Police believe the Peugeot may have been parked near 9 Freight Road, facing Mickleham Road, about 9.30pm on Thursday.

“The wagon, which was purchased through Pickles Auctions in July last year, was not registered and did not have any registration plates,” Detective Senior Sergeant Bailey said.

“We are very interested in speaking with anyone who may have seen the unregistered Peugeot wagon on Thursday.”

Police confirmed Mr Balikel was already dead before the car was set alight but could not identify the cause of death.

Police believe at least two people were involved in the murder.

Mr Balikel was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and dark blue pants.
