Premier Cricket: Footscray Edgewater beaten by Camberwell Magpies

Defending premier Footscray Edgewater has slumped to a third successive defeat in the Victorian Premier Cricket.

The out-of-form Bulldogs tumbled to 11th on the ladder after a brutal 77-run loss to Camberwell Magpies at the Camberwell Sports Ground.

The Dogs couldn’t get anywhere near the Magpies’ 270, being bowled out for 193 on Saturday.

New recruit James Crosthwaite was the shining light with 70. He has been superb since crossing from Geelong, scoring three 50s and a 100 from six innings to average just under 50.

Travis Dean (46) and Dylan Kight (35) added to a strong foundation for the Bulldogs, who were still in the game at 5-173.

Then came a lower-order collapse, with the Dogs losing their last five wickets for 20.

Jack McNamara did the damage with the ball for the Magpies with 5-31 off 17.

The Bulldogs will be desperate to arrest their slide when they host fourth-from-bottom Geelong in a two-dayer at Merv Hughes Oval, starting Saturday.

In the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division, Yarraville Club slaughtered St Bernard’s Old Collegians by 177 runs at the Hilbert Oval.

The Clubbers passed the Snowdogs’ 199 and rubbed salt into their wounds by making a mammoth 376.

Four batsmen reached half-centuries for the Clubbers – Konrad Kurta (92no), Adam Contessa (69), Emmett Bronca (52) and Ben Tupper (51).

In taking six wickets, Bronca was the match’s stand-out player.

The Clubbers, last year’s champions, moved up to third with their second win from three games.

In north division, Altona North scored its first win of the season by 35 runs over PEGS in the comfortable surroundings of the Morris McDonald Oval.

Set 177 for victory, North powered to 8-211 after Matt Saunders made 97.

Spotswood lost outright to Keilor, while Laverton was beaten for the first time this summer in an 81-run road loss to Doutta Stars.

In west A1, Williamstown CYMS proved too strong for Altona Roosters in a 76-run victory.

The CYs were in the box seat after powering to 8-300 on the back of new recruit Lakshan Rodrigo (116) and teenager Harrison Carter (72).

The Roosters could manage only 8-224 in reply.

Newport-Digman remains winless after falling to Point Cook despite Matt Shiell taking 11 wickets for the match.
