A man has died in a multi-vehicle crash on the Princes Freeway at Laverton early Tuesday morning.
Emergency services were called to the smash, near the Kororoit Creek Road outbound exit ramp about 5.50am.
Two trucks and several cars were involved in the collision, Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton told 3AW.
“I don’t have the full details other than there were five or six cars involved and two trucks, one of which jack-knifed,” he said.
Police confirmed a man died at the scene.
“It is believed a Ford Ranger utility towing a trailer was travelling outbound in the far-left lane on the Princes Freeway when it collided nose-to-tail with three other cars near Kororoit Creek Road about 5.50am,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.
“The collision caused one of the vehicles, a white Kia sedan, to veer across the freeway when two trucks collided with the vehicle.
“The male driver of the Kia, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
“No one else was injured and the drivers are assisting police with their enquiries.”
Ambulance Victoria said several other people were assessed, but none were taken to hospital.
The Princes Freeway remained closed outbound at the M80 Ring Road on Tuesday afternoon.
VicRoads advised there was no access to the Princes Freeway Geelong-bound from the West Gate Freeway, M80 Ring Road or Geelong Road.
Motorists were being advised to exit at Millers Road or Grieve Parade and use Kororoit Creek Road to return to the Princes Freeway.
Drivers on the M80 Ring Road were told to use Boundary Road and Fitzgerald Road rivers to get back onto the freeway.
Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to come forward.
