Small school, big heart

Annunciation Primary School is “where every child matters to every teacher”.

Principal Robyn Kelly says the Brooklyn Catholic school’s mantra reflects the values of its students and teachers, as well as the curriculum, which is designed to cater for the whole child.

Annunciation School was established in the mid-1960s to provide a second school in the Kingsville Parish. The early school catered for up to 200 students, many of them attending from the migrant hostel on Millers Road. The hostel was closed in the early 1970s but the Josephite nuns administered the school up until 1980.

These days the school has a diverse population representing many different nationalities.

“It is a small school with a big heart,” Mrs Kelly says. “Because we are small we know all our children and families, our students have a lot of empathy for others so there is laughter and happiness in our rooms. The staff are very passionate about their role and work tirelessly to ensure that their teaching is contemporary and suits the needs of our students.”

Specialist subjects including Japanese, digital technologies, physical education, art and music are all available to students.

Private music lessons are run through The Music Bus while literacy and maths intervention programs as well as extension programs are also on offer.

Mrs Kelly, who has served in education for 30 years in Australia and abroad, says her vision for Annunciation is to continue to create a place where children are heard and valued.

“My passion is that no child nor parent ever feels anonymous in our school,” she says.
