Growing opportunities for the arts

The Substation in Newport has put the call out to Hobsons Bay residents to join its newly created Community Reference Group.

Putting the community at the heart of its engagement with the local area, the group seeks to increase community participation, bringing together local knowledge and stakeholders to inform planning and decision making.

The initiative comes off the back of a standout year for local attendance at The Substation, says director, Brad Spolding.

“Close to 10,000 Hobson’s Bay City Council residents attended events last year, while attendants from the greater west of Melbourne brought the count to 23,000,” Brad explains.

“The community-led reference group will further deepen connections with the neighbourhood, on top of existing audience participation.

“The new group will enable growing opportunities for artists, schools and local community groups in Hobsons Bay and the greater west of Melbourne to engage with the venue and program.”

Following a public recruitment process in March this year, The Substation welcomed local Aboriginal artist and community leader Luke Isaacs onto its management committee as community ambassador.

Acting as chair to the Community Reference Group, Mr Isaacs looks forward to working with other local community advocates in promoting and supporting The Substation as they bring world-class contemporary arts to the region.

Open to all residents of Hobsons Bay with a passion for contemporary art and community engagement, applications to join the Community Reference Group are now open.
