Major delays are expected to be experienced around Altona, Altona North, Brooklyn and Laverton North due to the closure of the West Gate Freeway between the M80 Ring Road and Grieve Parade for West Gate Tunnel works.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area where possible.
There are increased traffic volumes and delays affecting the M80 Ring Road, Princes and West Gate freeways, and Millers, Blackshaws, Kororoit Creek and Boundary roads.
There are detours along Geelong, Millers, Boundary, Little Boundary and Geelong roads.
Motorists travelling between the Western Freeway and the city, are suggested to try Ballarat Road or the Tullamaine and Calder freeways instead.
An accident on the Princes Freeway outbound prior to Kororoit Creek Road had compounded issues.
The West Gate Freeway closure is in place until 5am January 11.
