A much-loved Yarraville cat, Mooncake, has been rescued by Metro train workers after wandering from his home.
Mooncake was spotted injured near Seddon train station.
A driver alerted authorised officers who found Mooncake and drove him to U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital.
The furry adventurer underwent emergency surgery for a fractured skull and jaw, and unfortunately lost an eye, but his owner says he is recovering and adapting well.
Lesley Friend said she wanted to thank Metro’s train driver and authorised officers for saving Mooncake, aged two.
“We’re very thankful that we got Mooncake back and that he’s alive and that he [the train driver] basically saved his life,“ she said.
“He’s a big part of our family.
“We’ve got two whippet dogs, I’ve got two adult children, and he’s a very big part of our life.“
Metro’s Wayne Boyd said the safety of all public transport users, including cats, was a priority.
“The safety of everyone who uses the rail network is our top priority, no matter who or what they are,“ he said.
“We saw that little Mooncake needed immediate help and didn’t waste any time.
“We made him as comfortable as we could and got him to the animal hospital right away.
“If you are using the rail network, we want every trip to be a safe one.
“Metro staff are always available to help you in the event of an emergency.
“I was really pleased when I heard that Mooncake had pulled through.
“He’s a tough little guy, I’m just glad we could help.”
