A mate of a young veterinary surgeon from Williamstown has become an R U OK? community ambassador to raise awareness of mental health struggles.
A few years ago, Albion resident Jack Levitt started ‘Flynn’s Walk’ to raise funds for suicide prevention in memory of his friend, Dr Flynn Hargreaves.
He said it said it was aimed at raising awareness that the rate of suicide among vets was four times higher than for the general population.
Mr Levitt has since become an ambassador for R U OK?, a harm-prevention charity that aims to inspire and empower people to connect with friends, family and colleagues who might be struggling with life.
This year, R U OK? Day on Thursday, September 9, serves as a reminder that every day is a day to start a conversation.
“I have found myself having an ‘are you okay?’ conversation more than once and have seen the benefits of asking, listening, encouraging action and checking in,” Mr Levitt said.
“I love the R U OK? message because it is simple and anyone can use it.
“It can be really daunting starting a conversation with someone but you don’t have to have all the answers,
“It can be really tempting to jump in and try and fix someone’s issues but just being there in a time of need can make a world of difference.”
