Yarraville Tennis Club shines

Play can be extended at Yarraville Tennis Club’s eight courts after 10 15-metre lighting towers were installed.

Yarraville is one of the leading clubs in the west, providing social and competitive tennis for adults and juniors since 1914.

The new lighting was funded by the club and Maribyrnong council.

Club president Denise Clarke said it was an exciting moment when the new LED lights on all eight courts were switched on.

“The difference in the lighting quality is enormous, as is the functionality,” she said.

“The previous lights took 15-20 minutes to warm up, and lux reading faded as the years progressed.

“The new lights turn on instantaneously and are not expected to fade over the years.

“The court areas are evenly lit so there are no dark spots around the courts.

“The walkways around the courts are also now generously lit, improving the ambience around the courts at night making them more inviting and convivial.”

Mayor Michael Clarke said the energy-efficient LED light fittings helped reduce the council’s environmental impact while meeting modern standards for community competitions and social activities.

“The lighting upgrades at the Yarraville Tennis Club help ensure our local sporting competitions and social activities are supported, and that our ever-growing community continues to have access to sustainable, safe and functional public outdoor facilities here in their own backyard,” he said.

“I have no doubt players and residents will appreciate these improvements and as the warm weather approaches I hope our community takes the opportunity to make the most of the facilities.”
