Finding a path out of gambling grip

A Hobsons Bay resident is sharing her story of life after gambling addiction to help others find their own way out of gambling’s grip.

Anna Bardsley has paired with Victoria University screen media student Mya Raven-Luck to bravely share her story of gambling addiction and how finding her true passion and hobbies saved her.

The video is one of a series being published on Hobsons Bay Council’s website as part of Gambling Harm Awareness Week runs (October 18 to 25) to highlight the damage caused by gambling while offering a positive alternative for those experiencing gambling addiction.

The videos are part of the council’s The Digital Switch, a community-led project aimed at minimising the impact of gambling on older people and addressing social isolation and loneliness.

The project, launched in 2019, connected seniors aged 60 years and over with young people to design positive socialising and outlets.

COVID-19 put a halt to many of the planned activities, but not before the series of videos was created.

Participants also have projects to look forward to early next year, including a ‘Cook, Share, Learn’ program.

Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the community knows the damage that electronic gaming machines can wreak on people’s lives.

“In 2019-20, gambling stats show $34.46 million was lost on electronic gaming machines (EGMs) in Hobsons Bay, a sobering figure when it is averaged out to $129,632 per day,” he said.

Cr Marsden said what starts as a social outing seeking companionship for some, can quickly turn into a way of life with devastating consequences.

“Promoting Gambling Harm Awareness Week and providing a program like the Digital Switch will shine a spotlight on alternatives – alternatives that can be uplifting and long lasting.”
