A five-year-old girl was also in the same vehicle, and was taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

A 26-year-old Flemington man was behind the wheel of the Toyota and was taken to hospital under police guard with serious injuries.

A third man from the Toyota fled the scene on foot and was believed to be carrying a knife.

The man was last seen on Mitchell Street and is described as African in appearance.

He was wearing a red baseball cap and dark-coloured clothing.
