A series of offences, including 11 unlicensed drivers and 12 unregistered vehicles, were detected in Hobsons Bay over the long weekend, as part of a major road safety blitz.

Operation ARID saw police across the state ramp up their enforcement, which in turn saw 37 offences detected in Hobsons Bay and six detected in Maribyrnong.

Apart from a number of unlicensed drivers and unregistered vehicles, three drunk drivers, five disqualified drivers, one seatbelt offence and one mobile phone offence were among those detected in Hobsons Bay over the course of the four day operation.

Maribyrnong on the other hand recorded two drunk drivers, one unlicensed driver and two motorists disobeying signs and signals among the six detected offences.

According to Victoria Police, five people have been killed on Victoria’s roads this month, bringing the total number of lives lost this year to 55, an increase of seven at the same time last year.

Assistant Commissioner of road policing Glenn Weir said overall it was pleasing to see the majority of motorists do the right thing over the long weekend.

“However, it’s completely unacceptable that so many motorists are continuing to take risks on our roads,” he said.

“Our increased focus on road safety across March has only begun and the community should be assured they’ll continue to see police out enforcing during this high-risk period.”

“We plead with all road users to make good choices – one bad decision is all it takes to cause a tragedy.”
