Athletes from Williamstown Swimming and Lifesaving Club (S&LC) and Altona Life Saving Club (LSC) impressed on the labour day weekend when they competed in the Victorian Championships in Warrnambool.
The Hobsons Bay athletes were among the 750 competitors who took to the beach over three days of competition.
Overall both lifesaving clubs achieved success, collectively placing in 13 events which spanned over three categories: water, beach and lifesaving.
Jack Wolff from Altona LSC managed to score first place in the open male beach sprint and was also part of Altona’s open male beach relay team which also took out gold.
Williamstown S&LC nabbed first place in the Marchpast event, which was held on Friday night before the competition was officially opened.
Life Saving Victoria director of aquatic sport Aaron Green congratulated the athletes who took part in the “outstanding weekend of competition” in Warrnambool.
“It is fantastic to see your commitment to your sport, as well as to your communities as patrolling lifesavers come through in such an excellent weekend of competition across beach, water, surf boat and lifesaving disciplines,” he said.
“Aquatic sports serve as great active training for our lifesavers in skills they use during weekend patrols such as rescue techniques, surf swimming and resuscitation, as well as lifesaving and first aid knowledge in events like champion lifesaver and champion patrol.”
“I would also like to thank our officials, team managers, clubs and other supporters for your
dedication to making this weekend happen and Warrnambool SLSC for hosting us in the fabulous west region.”
