Stay away from Altona dog beach, EPA warns

By Molly Magennis

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has warned residents to avoid the water at the Altona Dog Beach, following a significant pollution incident at Cherry Lake two weeks ago.

In a post on Facebook, the EPA said the public should not fish at the Cherry Creek estuary and the Altona Dog Beach, and that people and their pets should not consume, collect or pick up any fish from the area.

Melbourne Water and the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) were made aware of the incident on March 8 and began undertaking clean-up and investigations.

Various animals like fish and swans have been seen dead in the area as a result.

Melbourne Water continues to clean up dead fish from Cherry Lake and the entrance from the creek to the bay.

Clean up will continue with support from Hobsons Bay council.

If you see dead fish or other signs of the effects of pollution in the area, call 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842) or contact@epa.vic.gov.au.
