National champs get underway on Sunday

Some of the best junior basketballers from across the country will take to the court the next couple of weeks.

The under-18 and under-20 national championships are being held on the school holidays, with the Victorian teams expected to again be among the contenders.

The under-18 championships start in Ballarat on Sunday, with two under-18 boys and two under-18 girls teams representing Victoria.

Wyndham’s Nate Hargrave was named in the initial under-18 country team, while Broadmeadows Sarah Portlock was named as an emergency for the under-18 women’s metro side.

The under-20 championships along with the Kevin Coombs Cup will be played in Mackay from April 19.

The under-20 men’s team which was initially named included a number of familiar faces.

Craigieburn resident AJ Magbegor, Broadmeadows Anthony Dell’Orso and Melton’s Bol Dengdit were all named in the team.

Wyndham’s Jason Bryant will coach the Kevin Coombs Cup side, with Whittlesea’s Gabrielle Smith one of the emergencies.

Those named in the initial under-20 side include Keilor’s Amy O’Hara, Wyndham’s Dyani Ananiev, Sunbury Jets and Macedon Ranges’ Erin Condron. Former Keilor player Tess Heal is also part of that team. Wyndham’s Lauren Jones was named as an emergency.

The initial under-20 Navy team included Keilor’s Grace Graham and Wyndham’s Tanielle Knight.
