There has been a significant increase in theft of number plates from vehicles in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay. Offenders can quickly remove number plates undetected, and often use stolen number plates on other vehicles to commit offences including ram raids, pursuits, petrol drive-offs and toll evasion.
Police are seeking the community’s assistance to prevent number plate theft through a very simple strategy. The use of one way screws makes number plate theft more difficult, acting as a deterrent to thieves. These can be inserted using a standard screwdriver, but require a special tool to be removed.
One way screws are available from a variety of hardware stores and retailers stocking automotive accessories, and they are a small investment in peace of mind.
When parking your car consider the safest location possible. One of the best ways to keep your car safe is in a locked garage, in a well-lit driveway or otherwise a well-lit area. If you do not have access to a garage, consider installing sensor lights in your driveway to deter offenders, as offenders will target vehicles at night in poorly lit driveways. If parking in the street, park under street lighting where possible.
