Several Western Jets players have been invited to the AFLW draft combine. More than 100 players have been selected for the combine, which will be state-based this year. The combine will be shorter this year with just one physical test, the two-kilometre time trial. Jets captain Charlotte Baskaran leads the Jets selected with Montana Ham, Krystal Russell and Laura Elliott also invited.

Williamstown was brought back to earth in the Victorian Football League on Saturday night. After claiming their first win of the season last week the Seagulls were no match for Frankston, losing 10.15 (75)-3.16 (34). Liam Hunt had 24 disposals for the Seagulls. Meanwhile, Footscray suffered a 13.12 (90)-4.11 (35) loss to Collingwood.

Spotswood stamped its authority in the Western Region Football League women’s division 1 competition on Saturday against Hoppers Crossing. Spotswood piled on the goals in the 17.9 (111)-1.2 (8) win. Caitlin Brennan kicked five goals in the win. In the other division 1 match in the first weekend of the split round, Werribee Centrals beat Yarraville Seddon Eagles, 7.14 (56)-3.2 (20). In division 2, Point Cook Centrals, Caroline Springs, Point Cook and West Footscray took the points.

Western United’s vision for a female team in the A-League Women’s competition is a reality with the side being granted a licence. United announced on Thursday that it had been granted a licence to compete in the 2022-23 season. Western United chairman Jason Sourasis said this was a special day for female soccer in Melbourne’s west.
“This is a special day in the history of our club,” he said. “This is one of those days that will stick out on the timeline when you look back 10, 20, 30 years from now.”
