Have your say on new Ballarat Street park

Maribyrnong council have released draft concept designs for what a new park in Ballarat Street could look like, after community consultation revealed the community were keen to keep the space permanent.

The parklet at the northern end of Ballarat Street was established during COVID as a way to support trading and upkeep social connections.

Initially delivered as a six-month trial, feedback on the Council Plan 2021-2025, confirmed the space has been well received by many locals and visitors.

In February and March this year, 3,000 residents provided feedback as to whether to keep the space, with 68 per cent of respondents in favour of retaining the park.

The state government has now given council funding to make the space permanent, and council are seeking community feedback on the proposed designs.

Council has also released a draft Outdoor Dining Policy for community discussion, which outlines the proposed criteria and requirements for a permanent installation and associated fees.

Maribrynong mayor Anthony Tran said encouraged residents to give their feedback.

“This shared open space has been a great addition to the Village, not only as a place for residents to dine and relax but also to enable local traders to increase patronage in an environment of social distancing during the pandemic,” he said.

“We’re suggesting this permanent outdoor space could be a green space that supports outdoor dining, a bit of play and relaxing with friends. We’re keen to hear what residents think of the draft concept.”

Feedback on the concept designs for the Ballarat Street park close on May 29, and June 24 for the daft Outdoor Dining Policy.
