Western Metropolitan senator Kaushaliya Virjibhai Vaghela has questioned why the waiting periods for young Victorians has remained so long following the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During a senate session on Thursday, May 26, she said a number of young Victorians were still waiting to book a test.
“The COVID-19 lockdowns disrupted all our lives, and the most impacted have been our young
Victorians,” she said.
“Many missed out on getting their driver’s licences.
“Currently the waiting period to book a test is almost two months across most centres in Victoria.
Ms Vaghela asked Roads and Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll to respond as what action the state government would take to reduce the long waiting periods and speed up the booking process for driving tests.
“Young Victorians who are eager to get their drivers licences are feeling disappointed and desperate as they have to depend on family members to move around,” she said.
“This puts a pause on everything they need to do.”
Vicroads has advised learner drivers to visit the online booking platform instead of calling the contact centre to make or change a licensing appointment as the online booking platform has the latest appointment availability.
