It was a day to forget for Braybrook in Western Region Football League division 3 against the Suns on Saturday.
In a battle between second and third, the Brookers were taught a lesson by the Suns, who wanted it a lot more.
While the two sides had the same amount of scoring shots, it was a convincing 12.5 (77)-5.12 (42) win for the Suns according to Brookers coach Vinnie Turcinovich.
Turcinovich said they were disappointed with the result, having taken in high hopes they could break through against the Suns.
“We’ve fallen short a few times against them and we’re unlucky a few times that we couldn’t find ways to come away with the win,” he said.
“We thought we had a really good chance on Saturday. It was not our day and days like we had don’t come around frequently.
“Nothing went right as a coach and as players. There were so many elements that we didn’t get right”.”
Turcinovich said the Suns came out switched on and were ready to take the contest on and work really hard.
He said they also adapted to the conditions much better than his side did.
“We spoke about the conditions and they’re very important as any team knows,” he said.
“The conditions were pretty windy and our skills let us down.
“The team that adapts to the conditions better normally wins and they did early and kicked straight.
“Bad kicking is bad football and it puts us under a lot of pressure.”
In one small win, the Brookers were able to win the last quarter, including kicking three goals late when full forward Shaun Buttigieg-Clarke, had been taken off.
Stephen Mihelakos was the only multiple goal kicker for the Brookers, with two.
Turcinovich said it was hard to name the best after the performance they had put out.
He said they had a good chat after the game about things they need to work on and making sure they’re prepared properly heading into the game.
“It was all between the ears,” he said. “We need to make sure we’re playing our brand of football for a bit longer.
“We have got some players who will come in and make a difference and a few coming back from injuries, who need a few more weeks under their belts.”
The Brookers remain in third spot, with their three losses coming to the two teams above them, Albanvale and the Suns.
The Brookers this face Albanvale. Turcinovich said when they play their football, they believe they can match it with the top two sides.
“You want to play the best teams,” he said. “We got a bit of momentum in the last quarter so hopefully we can take it into this game.
“It’s the perfect team to reset against.”
Albanvale enters the match on the back of a massive win against Laverton.
The Cobras taking the points, 40.21 (261)-2.1 (13).
Luke Montrose kicked 13 goals.
In the other match, Tarneit beat Sunshine Heights, 14.8 (92)-5.16 (46).
