Altona resident Melinda Corry has used her passion for the environment and her community to help clean up Altona’s beaches and keeping their swimmers safe. She tells Matthew Sims she loves spending time with her friends and fellow volunteers to work towards creating opportunities for her children.
What is your connection to Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay?
I have lived in Hobsons Bay for more than 20 years now and I love it here. It is where we’ve decided to raise our family and it is where we have a great group of mates and support. During COVID, I have spent more time than ever at Altona, primarily working from home which I have enjoyed.
What do you love about where you live?
I love the sense of community in Altona. It has got a small town feel and it is lovely going out and seeing people you know, down the shops or at sports events. I’m proud that I’m a patrolling member of the Altona Life Saving Club. It is a huge part of our lives and has been a really positive and important part of why we love Altona. We’ve all made amazing friendships in Altona and through the club. One thing I value in particular is the positive role models for our kids. They are surrounded by people keeping active and volunteering to patrol the beach and look after the community. It has also provided them with lots of opportunities to do different things.
How has your passion for the west informed your life and work?
I’m passionate about our environment and trying to help make a positive difference. In 2016, I kicked off the Altona chapter of Altona Beach Patrol. I have met wonderful like-minded people through this and collectively, we have picked up over 2.5 tonnes of rubbish from our beaches.
Where is your favourite local place to spend time?
There are so many great spots near our home but if I am celebrating, I’m heading to Bar Joliet with my gorgeous mates.
