Premier Cricket: Footscray Edgewater on target for fine season

Footscray Edgewater is handling its status of the hunted confidently, striding to two wins from two starts in its Victorian Premier Cricket title defence.

The Bulldogs claimed a bonus point in their eight-wicket one-day win over Ringwood on the road at the Russell Lucas Oval on Saturday. Spearheaded by three wickets to speedster Jake Haberfield, the Doggies restricted the home side to 6-172 off 50 overs.

They had little trouble reaching the target, new recruit James Crosthwaite kick-starting the innings with 58 and in-form Travis Dean (67no) and wicketkeeper-batsman Dylan Kight (40no) bringing it home in 38.5 overs.

Despite the Bulldogs having a target on their back as last season’s champions, Crosthwaite says it has been relatively smooth sailing for his side in the opening fortnight.

“Whenever you do win a flag, the following year you’re a big scalp for the opposition, but I don’t think our guys are feeling that pressure,” he said.

“We’re preparing as best as we can, taking each game as if it’s just as important as the last and going from there.”
