People of all ages across Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong are encouraged to put on their favourite pair of pyjamas as part of the annual National Pyjama Day celebrations.
Scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, National Pyjama Day raises funds for the The Pyjama Foundation to recruit, screen and train committed volunteers to make an incredible difference in the lives of children in care.
The Pyjama Foundation Founder and chief executive Bronwyn Sheehan said children in foster care often failed to meet national education standards.
“We know that 35 per cent of Year 9 students in foster care do not achieve the national minimum standard for spelling,” she said.
“One in three children do not meet the minimum national standard for reading and 40 per cent do not meet minimum standards for numeracy.
“With the support of those in our community, The Pyjama Foundation can continue to support kids in care.”
Across Australia, more than 45,000 children are in out of home care and currently The Pyjama Foundation is only able to reach 1100.
The Pyjama Foundation’s Love of Learning Program works by matching a community volunteer with a child in the out of home care system.
Ms Sheehan said the campaign will see workplaces, schools or teams across the country don pyjamas for the cause.
“This year, National Pyjama Day falls on July 22, however you can rock your best PJs and get involved anytime in July, August or September to make a difference,” she said.
All participants will receive a free host kit, which will include posters, balloons, bunting, stickers and more.
