Daniel Barlow starred for Williamstown Athletics on the opening day of the new AV Shield season, claiming victory in the men’s division 2 1500 metres at Werribee on Saturday. Barlow won the final in a time of 4:08.97 after some brave front-running. Riley Kane ran a strong fourth, seven seconds behind the winner.

Lawn bowls

Yarraville-Footscray cruised to a 98-65 victory over Lalor in the Bowls Victoria men’s division 1. The Bulldogs made a clean sweep of all rinks to make it two-from-two to start the season and be the early pacesetters of section 3. Williamstown has moved to the top of its section in division 2 after a hard-fought 83-69 win over Sunshine City. Rosamond and Yarraville-Footscray (2) played out a thrilling draw.
