Maribyrnong cyclists and bicycle sport enthusiasts are encouraged to contribute to a new strategy looking at way the council can support those seeking out more adventurous ‘sports’ based cycling activities by answering a questionnaire.

Maribyrnong mayor Anthony Tran said the strategy aims to respond to the growing popularity of such sports in recent years.

“Bike sports like mountain biking, cyclo-cross and BMX are becoming an increasingly popular activity for locals and visitors to the area – and a critical pathway to learning bike skills that will keep you safe on the road,” he said.

“To support the continued growth in bike sports across the municipality, council is looking to develop a Bike Sport Strategy – to guide investment and planning in the delivery of bike sports initiatives and facilities over the next 10 years.

“To help guide the development of this valuable document, I encourage residents to share their thoughts and let us know the types of facilities they’d like to see council support and deliver over the coming years.

BikeWest president John Symons said the development of the strategy would be a good first step to increase the accessibility to bike sports in Maribyrnong.

“We think it is very important,” he said.

“We want to provide safe places for people to ride their bikes.”

The questionnaire will close at 5pm on Wednesday, August 31.
