Hobsons Bay council has progressed with plans for a state-of-the-art aquatics centre in Altona Meadows, which would lead to the decommissioning of the Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre.
During its meeting on Tuesday, August 9, council passed a motion to note the preliminary concept designs for the proposed Western Aquatic and Early Years Centre [WAEYC], which will be available for public consultation until Friday, September 23 and continue to advocate for state and federal funding for the $60 million project.
Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said the new centre would help service the catchment area’s growing population.
“It will bring people into Hobsons Bay because the new facility will be a destination of choice in the western part of our city,” he said.
“That means more money spent in our local businesses.”
A July report revealed that while the LSFC facilities could be retained in its current configuration for a further 20 to 30 years with additional refurbishment and renewal works, but a number of elements were reaching a limit of economic viability for the council to maintain or renew.
The council also passed a motion to approve the draft McCormack Park master plan, which outlines new water play park and youth facilities, for public exhibition until Friday, September 23.
Hobsons Bay councillor Matt Tyler said the council would continue to push for more funding to support the developments.
“Council has made a $20 million commitment contingent on a contribution from other levels of government,” he said.
“We’ve also established an aquatics reserve using proceeds from properties sold by council.”
LSFC aquatics educator Meredith Griffiths said she rejected council’s plan to decommission the LSFC
“I believe the decommissioning of our centre goes against many of the council’s public health outcomes,” she said.
“I witness and participate every day in the personal milestones and miracles people obtain at accessing this facility.
“This facility is a joyous place we love.”
