Rising stronger from grief and loss

Footscray songwriter and poet Gabriela Georges is bringing a deeply personal look at how the grief she experienced following the death of her mother shaped her relationships and life to the Bowery Theatre in St Albans.

As part of this year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival, her show ‘Rise & Fall’ is coming to the St Albans Community Centre for one night only on Thursday, October 6 from 7.30pm.

Ms Georges said she has been developing the show since 2017.

“It’s about how grief and relationships change over time,” she said.

“It doesn’t necessarily follow linear time.”

Ms Georges said the performance will incorporate her music and poetry, as well as materials from her mother’s clothing.

“It’s a very intimate show,” she said.

“It’s kind of personal and universal at the same time.

“Everyone, eventually, will deal with grief and loss.”

Ms Georges said the show looks at how she dealt with her mother’s metastatic duodenal cancer diagnosis and death within a few months, when she was only 20 at the time.

“I think, at that age, I didn’t expect that to happen,” she said.

The work will complement Ms Georges work within The Grief Cocoon initiative, which hosts events and workshops to help people through their journeys with grief and loss.

Brimbank City Council and the Sidney Myer Fund is supporting the development and performance of ‘Rise and Fall’.
