Yarraville’s St Augustine’s Catholic Church’s has received support to cut its energy spending, thanks to a commitment from the state government of more than $8000.
The church was among 88 community groups across the state to receive grants through the second round of the state government’s Community Climate Change and Energy Action program, receiving $8228 for the installation of a 9.7 kW solar installation.
The second round of the program has committed $1.8 million to a range of energy-saving initiatives, including converting to solar electricity with battery storage, switching to more efficient LED lighting, upgrading older air conditioning units or installing efficient electric hot water systems.
Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the program was another step to cutting down the emissions of community groups and bringing the state closer to its goal of cutting its emissions in half by 2030.
“We’re giving community groups like kindergartens, sports clubs and cultural groups the opportunity to reduce their energy costs by upgrading their facilities with simple switches which save money and slash emissions,” she said.
The program has invested a total of $3 million, cutting bills by $1.2 million a year and saving more than 4400 tonnes of greenhouse gases annually.
Projects have been scheduled for completion by May 2023.
