Maribyrnong swimmers of all ages will soon have new facilities to enjoy, with Footscray MP Katie Hall and Maribyrnong mayor Anthony Tran and councillor Cuc Lam visiting the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre [MAC] to turn the first sod on the new splash park development.

The state government is committing more than $4 million from its Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus program, with Maribyrnong council providing more than $6 million towards the upgrade, which will include two water slides and family friendly change rooms.

The project is expected to create 23 jobs during construction, with patronage expected to increase by 10 per cent pushing the expected annual attendance to more than one million people for the first time.

“I can’t wait to see the project complete and for more people to make a splash at MAC for years to come,” Ms Hall said.

Cr Tran said the project would give Maribyrnong locals more reasons to visit the MAC.

“Once complete, this splash park and waterslide will add a new dimension to the much-loved MAC,” he said.

Community Sport Minister Ros Spence said the grant program supported local community sport infrastructure.

“We’re supporting new indoor swim centres like this, because we know it’s what young people and families in the heart of Melbourne’s west need and deserve,” she said.

Since 2014, the state government has invested more than $1.6 billion into community sport infrastructure.

The government is also helping Victorian kids learn to swim by investing another $400,000 to run the popular VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program 2023 and $1.3 million into the Youth Aquatic Accreditation Program, which is giving 17 to 25-year-olds the opportunity to teach swimming skills and water safety.
