Ella Hooper’s Old News tour is coming to Hotel Westwood in Footscray on Friday, October 28.
Hooper has been an important part of the Australian music scene for the majority of her life.
She was discovered by Triple J Unearthed at 13, and had her first number one single, Mascara, on her 17th birthday, with her band Killing Hiedi.
Her forthcoming solo album Small Town Temple is a personal collection of reflections written during lockdown from her family home in Violet Town.
Hooper has embarked on a tour to celebrate the first single off the album, Old News.
Lyrically, she said the track is a “pep talk” to herself about getting back out there and releasing new music.
“You sort of doubt these things sometimes and wonder about these things, but I still really wanted to do it,” Hooper said.
She said the rest of the album has an Americana influence musically which came from her parents’ love for artists like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.
“That was me finally getting to sort of try the flavour musically that I wanted to try but lyrically, I think the isolation was a big factor in just kind of going straight to the heart, straight to the bone,” Hooper said.
She said the Hotel Westwood gig is the one she is the most excited for on the tour.
“My brother has been living in Footscray for a long time now,” Hooper said.
“I hang out there a lot, I love that venue.
“It just has a really good scene and community around it, that I think really fits this new music, so that is the gig to get to, I reckon.”
