Maribyrnong council’s clean-up in the flood-affected areas of Maribyrnong have continued following a brief suspension of hard waste collection due to rainy conditions over the weekend.
The works have included the installation of taps on fire hydrants throughout the area to provide fresh drinking water and support the clean-up works.
The cleansing team has so far collecting more than 1500 tonnes or more than 4000 cubic metres of hard waste materials from nature strips throughout Maribyrnong.
Over the weekend, Disaster Relief Australia representatives set up a hub at the Raleigh Road Activitiy Centre to co-ordinate the registration of volunteers at 54 Raleigh Road in Maribyrnong.
Flood affected residents looking for volunteer support can register with council staff at the Relief Centre at 9 Randall Street in Maribyrnong.
Maribyrnong mayor Anthony Tran said there was still a lot of work ahead for volunteers and the council.
“We always knew this would take time, but we are working our way progressively through the flood area cleaning up as we go,” he said.
“It has been phenomenal to see so many members of our community also doing their bit to help their neighbours.
“I could not be more proud of the way our community has come together to support impacted residents in their hour of need.”
