Performance hub coming to Altona

Altona’s Logan Reserve will become a hub of performance theatre and projections as local theatre company Born in a Taxi presents its transparent venue The CUBE.

Designed and built by local sculptor David Murphy, each day will host a new experience for visitors, including to a special dance, comedy and participatory theatre performance to a showcase of local street art.

The CUBE will launch on Wednesday, December 7 with ‘Butterfly House’, which tells stories of flight and metamorphosis through interactive performance, puppetry and song, while spectators are also invited to create their own butterflies from recycled chip packets, with the show starting at 12.30pm and then open from 1.30pm to 7pm on Wednesday.

‘Butterfly House’ will then be returning on Thursday, December 8 for shows at 12.30pm and 4.30pm, with the installation open from 5.30pm to 8pm.

On Friday, December 9, the installation will host special screenings of Born in a Taxi’s interactive work ‘Please Wait Here’, local short films and an animation screening from 7.30pm.

The theatre company will be exhibiting their show Enlighten on Saturday, December 10 from 8pm to 9.30pm.

The CUBE will host an art gallery with artwork being created live by local street artist Aki Yaguchi on Sunday, December 11, before transforming into a dance floor for local dance group L2R Dance hitting up the dance floor with MC Philly and DJ Antagonize.

Visitors to The CUBE on Monday, December 12 will have a chance to experience artist A Million Things’ ‘Numinous Bloom’ interactive mechanical garden, open from noon to 10pm.

The CUBE will then close off the season with a night of contemporary performance and dance explorations from Melbourne’s most experienced dancers on Tuesday, December 13 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

Funded by Hobsons Bay council and Creative Victoria, all performances are free to the public.

Born in a Taxi is a renowned physical theatre and contemporary performance ensemble which has delivered exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Asia and all over Australia.
