Two Melbourne-based bands will soon be hitting the stage at the Newport Bowls Club.

Werribee-based vocalist Jimmy Cupples and Yarraville drummer Haydn Meggitt are members of soul and blues rock outfit King Canyon, who will be supporting The Badloves on Sunday, November 4 from 2pm to 5pm.

A finalist in the 2012 season of The Voice, Cupples said his love for singing comes from his parents and growing up around the western suburbs such as Newport, Altona and Williamstown.

“I was only eight years old, and as an only child they brought me along to all their shows,” he said.

“I would listen intently to their voices and from there, I developed an ear for music.

“I grew up in a time when a lot of parents didn’t want their kids to take on a life of music.

“I was very blessed they were in the music scene.”

Cupples said he formed his new band King Canyon with guitarist James Ryan in March of 2020.

“It’s just been an incredible joy since then,” he said.

“There was a really incredible chemistry.”

Cupples said he was “totally stoked” to be supporting The Badloves, as well as supporting Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock frontman Ross Wilson on his Cool World tour, including a show at Summerfield Winery in Moonambel on Saturday, December 10.

“I never though I’d be able to make a living writing music,” he said.

Cupples said the band is coming out of a long stint in the recording studio, with creativity flowing from all band members, ahead of the release of the band’s debut album via Golden Robot Records.

“It’s an incredibly rare experience,” he said.

“We’ve recorded about 25 songs.”
