Maribyrnong has recorded the 24th highest number of animal cruelty cases across the state’s local government areas, according to a report released by RSPCA Victoria.
For the 2021-22 year, a total of 161 cases were recorded in Maribyrnong, while Hobsons Bay recorded the 34th highest number of animal cruelty cases with 113 recorded cases.
Out of the 10,577 cruelty reports recorded during the 2021/22 financial year, neglect continued to be the most common type of report received, with neglect the basis for 46 per cent of recorded cases, meaning members of the community had reported knowledge of animals subjected to lack of food, water, shelter or veterinary care.
RSPCA Victoria chief inspector Michael Stagg said any pet owners should look at the resources available to support them to avoid neglecting their pets.
“For many, the perception of animal cruelty relates to deliberate acts such as beating or wounding, and while this does occur, the data consistently shows the most common form of cruelty is neglect,” he said.
“There are many responsible pet ownership resources available, and we encourage anyone who is the owner or person in charge of animals to be aware of their responsibilities to provide care, or alternatively to seek help from their local council, a veterinarian or animal welfare organisation.
“It is important all pet owners understand the specific needs of their pets in terms of food, water, shelter, grooming and exercise.
If you have pets or are in charge of animals, make sure you provide them with sufficient food, access to clean water, adequate shelter, a clean and secure living space, regular veterinary checks, regular grooming, dental checks and farrier visits for horses.
Greater Geelong, Casey and Wyndham recorded the highest cases of animal cruelty, with 552, 531 and 379 reports respectively.
