Yarraville’s Annecto David House Learning Hub clients would soon have new equipment for its cooking program, thanks to a donation from Yarraville’s Pilgrim Uniting Church.

Church minister Reverend Ikani Vaitohi, council chair Ros Harris and parishioner Wilva Pelech visited the disability support hub on Wednesday, December 7 to present a cheque for $1450.

David House team leader Kerry Maher said the donation would contribute to purchasing new and improved equipment, including an air fryer and new chopping boards.

She said the facility runs the cooking program five days per week for five to eight clients, involving all steps of cooking a meal from shopping for ingredients to food preparation.

“We’re trying to give them all the life skills they need,” Ms Maher said.

She said the program has also further encouraged a feeling of family within the facility.

“They work really well together,” she said.

Ms Harris said the money was raised via a community jumble sale last month.

“We wanted to support a local group,” she said.’

“It’s about dignity in the end.

“Why should any of the participants have any less than what I use at home?”

Ms Harris said the church had connections to the organisation, with Ms Pelech’s late nephew Mark Nahyna a former client and her son Joe a current client.

David House will be celebrating 70 years since it was founded in 1952 on Thursday, December 15 from 12.30pm, with a special art show, Christmas choir performance, guest speakers, videos and displays on show during the afternoon.
