Microsoft has appointed AusNet Services to connect a data centre to the energy grid in Yarraville.
AusNet would manage the design, construction and operation of new transmission assets for Microsoft data centres in Yarraville, Truganina and Tullamarine.
The data centres would provide the physical infrastructure for the technology systems which local businesses, government, hospitals and schools rely on every day to deliver goods and services.
AusNet chief development officer Chad Hymas said the company was well placed to deliver the new infrastructure.
“We are building the network infrastructure and creating local jobs to strengthen Victoria’s digital economy,” he said.
“We are currently investigating the best pathway to connect the three data centre developments to our terminal stations via underground cables in road reserves.
“We are delighted to be the energy provider for this project which is aligned to AusNet’s business purpose of connecting communities.”
AusNet has planned to engage with stakeholders and local communities ahead of construction to ensure people are aware of any potential road disruptions.
AusNet have begun design work for the transmission assets, with construction expected to commence next year, with an estimated completion date in 2024.
