Williamstown Athletics rising star Celeste Mucci dominated the women’s under-18 high jump at the second round of Athletics Victoria’s shield competition at Moonee Valley on Saturday. Mucci won with a leap of 1.70m, just 2cm shy of her own club record. Jeanie Kane blitzed the women’s U14 800m in a winning time of 2:42.0. Kane pipped Western Athletics Georgia Muller at the finish line. Cosi Mucci posted the best time of 28.83 to win the men’s U18 200m, ahead of Keilor-St Bernard’s Michael Giancola by a mere 0.06. Brigette Mercaldi led the women’s division 2 800m runners, and Rhyan Thomas was tops in the men’s U16 3000m race. Jarrod Adams tackled six events, winning the open division 2 shot put with a distance of 11.44m.

Lawn bowls

Altona A’s are turning around a previous poor run this summer. The Brett Foley-led side made it three wins in a row with a 98-55 annihilation of Bundoora RSL at JK Grant Reserve on Saturday. The A’s claimed three rinks, including Bradley Peck (33-8), Mathew Rennex (24-11) and Shane Fordham (22-15). They now face a misfiring Moonee Ponds on Saturday. In division 1, Yarraville-Footscray bested Cheltenham 83-70. The Bulldogs will host Glenroy at Francis Street on Saturday. In division 2, Williamstown worked hard to hold its flawless record with a 83-74 win over Hoppers, while Altona Sports edged out Rosamond 76-72 in a thriller.
