Maribyrnong council are set to take the first steps towards a renewed Western Lawn at Footscray Park later this month.
Following the council’s motion to bring forward improvement works identified in the Footscray Park Masterplan, the works will include site excavation, soil replacement to allow new turf to flourish and irrigation and drainage upgrades.
Residents and park visitors are advised that due to the need to properly establish the root profile, the surface works will likely take until the end of the year to be fully established.
The council will be cordoning off the affected site to support the works and will reopen the site to the community as soon as practicable.
Maribyrnong council will also be fencing off the southern row of parking along Maribyrnong Boulevard until July to support the removal and replacement of soil and gravel on the 40,000 square-metre site, which will involve the use of excavators, graders and dump trucks.
The council will also close parts of the Eastern Lawn for short periods of time to support trenching and service connection, with signage erected to help park visitors navigate around the works.
Maribyrnong mayor Sarah Carter said the council is excited to see the project begin.
“This is something our community has been wanting for some time,” she said.
“We are also committed to making sure we get this right including giving the new turf enough time to establish, which will mean the lawn will remain out of bounds for much of the coming year.
“I look forward to celebrating the return of an amazing rejuvenated asset our community can continue to enjoy for years to come.”
