The Western Homelessness Network (WHN) is shining a light on the prevalence of homelessness and affordability issues among women older than 50 as part of a special one-night-only documentary screening on International Women’s Day.
The WHN will host a screening of ‘Under Cover’ at The Sun Theatre in Yarraville on Wednesday, March 8 from 6.30pm to 8.45pm, followed by a brief question-and-answer session with homelessness support workers.
Filmed over the course of two-and-a-half years and narrated by Margot Robbie, ‘Under Cover’ follows the stories of 10 over-50 women who have found themselves too old to be employed, struck down with illness, unable to get back into the workforce, dealing with the aftermath of difficult breakups and divorces and thrust into a life of homelessness.
WHN is a network of 24 specialist homelessness Services, managing 114 homelessness and family violence programs and 10 allied services and assisting about 20,000 individuals in Melbourne’s west.
Written, directed and produced by documentary filmmaker Sue Thomson, the film highlights the human stories within the fastest growing cohort currently experiencing homelessness in the country.
About one quarter of people experiencing homelessness in Victoria are in Melbourne’s west and while there are 14,000 social housing properties in Melbourne’s west, there are 17,000 people on the waiting list.
Tickets cost $22 and $12 for concession.
