A new look for Williamstown’s Gem Pier is on the way, with works now underway.

With a $1 million investment from the state government, the project includes installing new fenders along Gem Pier to provide safe access for berthing vessels and commercial ferries to ensure it remains an accessible destination for boaters.

Gem Pier will remain open to the public while the upgrade works take place, with temporary fencing and signage in place to ensure the public remain safe during the works.

The pier’s lower landing will also continue to operate for commercial tour operators, as well as for ferries in operation between Williamstown, the CBD and St Kilda.

Ports and Freight Minister and Williamstown MP Melissa Horne announced the work launch on Friday, March 3 and said Gem Pier is a popular destination for local visitors, boaters and commercial ferry operators alike.

“This upgrade will provide a huge benefit and ensure the pier can continue to be enjoyed well into the future,” she said.

“By starting the local port area plan we will safeguard the future of Williamstown’s historic, popular and vibrant maritime precinct.

“We want to keep the community well informed as the plan progresses – so there will be consultation taking place mid-2023 and we encourage people to provide their feedback.”

Victorian company Bridgewater Marine is delivering the works, which are a part of the Williamstown Local Port Area Plan, which sets out priorities for future investment, including the future of the Seaworks piers and jetties, wave wash and surge, sedimentation and access for large vessels.

Consultant Urbis will deliver the plan, with a draft set to be released for public consultation in mid-2023.
