Movies coming to Braybrook and Yarraville

Maribyrnong council is trialling an alternate use for two LED scoreboards at two local sports reserves, with two free movie screenings scheduled in celebration of Parks Week.

On Friday, March 10, in partnership with Yarraville Cricket Club, council is presenting ‘Over the Hedge’ at Yarraville Oval.

On Saturday, March 11, council is screening ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ at Skinner Reserve, with Dinjerra Primary School representatives providing food and drinks as part of a local fundraiser.

Gates open at 7pm, with the screenings commencing at 8pm.

Maribyrnong deputy mayor Cuc Lam first raised the opportunity to use the scoreboards to host free movie nights in a notice of motion during a 2022 council meeting, as a way to encourage community connection and promote other ways the community could enjoy local open spaces.

“I am delighted to see my idea come to fruition with the delivery of our first outdoor cinemas utilising the multi-purpose LED scoreboards,” she said.

“It is such a great way to bring the community together.”

Families are encouraged to bring their own blankets, low chairs, and a picnic, or purchase snacks and refreshments on the night, while alcohol is not permitted.

Maribyrnong mayor Sarah Carter said she is looking forward to seeing local families enjoy the free events.

“It’s wonderful to see these state-of-the-art LED screens doubling as movie screens providing additional benefits for our community.

“Our parks and open spaces play a vital role in bringing the community together and I look forward to exploring further movie night opportunities in the future.”
