A group of Laverton Community Education Centre (LCEC) clients have been busy building a light installation representing local flora and a butterfly which is native to the Laverton area.

As part of the Stepping Forward to Independence program and with support from Hobsons Bay council, participants have been partnering with arts and science group Skunk Control to create the science and arts-based Lightability in Laverton art installation, which will conclude in May and be installed in the foyer of the Woods Street Arts Space.

LCEC manager Bill Daly said the program included a range of capacity building models on topics such as arts, travel, cooking and gardening.

“Participants study the accredited Certificate I in Work Education which focuses on employment skills, literacy and numeracy, and life skills,” he said.

“The program includes a work placement in the second half of the year and is actively seeking employers who can provide placements.”

Star Weekly photographer Joe Mastroianni visited the LCEC on Tuesday, March 28 to capture the progress on the installation made so far.
