Maribyrnong pleased with budget

Maribyrnong council is pleased with some of the outcomes they advocated for, following the state budget.

Maribyrnong mayor Sarah Carter said council is pleased with some of the outcomes Maibyrnong has received following the hand down of the state budget.

“It’s pleasing to see some of the items we’ve been advocating for, on behalf of the Maribyrnong community, have been included in the Victorian State Budget,” she said.

Cr Carter said the funding for the new mental health and well being program for young adults in the inner-west was advocated for by council.

“Council advocated for the program through LeadWest, an alliance between five western metropolitan Melbourne councils,” she said.

“Providing access to mental health support and upgrades to much-loved open spaces will help support the well being and livelihood of our growing community now and into the future.”

Following councils declaration of the health emergency, Cr Carter is pleased with the response from government.

“On the back of the council’s declaration of a health emergency, citing the impacts of air and noise pollution from heavy trucks using local roads, Council also welcomes the $20 million investment in improving air quality in the inner west,” she said.

“Specifically for the development of programs that will help modernise trucks and improve air quality in the region.”

Council was also after funding for a study which was not included in the budget.

“Council also advocated for funding to support the delivery of a detailed business case and feasibility study for Creative West formerly NeXT , the first purpose-built 500 seat performing arts and cultural space in the inner west,” Cr Carter said.

“Along with funding to support the design and delivery of active transport improvements across the municipality, including the implementation of strategic cycling corridors to improve safety and connectivity, which were not included in the state budget.”

Hobsons Bay council declined to comment on the budget.
