On Wednesday afternoon, June 21, The Environmental Protection Authority Victoria was called to a factory in Brooklyn to reports of a chemical leak.
At 4.08pm a toxic water warning was been put in place for suburbs surrounding Kororoit creek after a chemical spill stained the creek orange.
The Environmental Protection Authority warned people to avoid contact with the water in the creek and the storm drains.
A duty holder caused the chemical spill and the EPA directed them to clean it up.
“EPA officers are investigating a chemical spill that is impacting storm water in Brooklyn and water in Kororoit Creek downstream of GJ Hosken Reserve, Altona North,” they said.
“The public should avoid storm water drainage and any contact with water until further notice.
“The chemical can potentially cause irritation of the skin and eyes and has stained the water orange.”
