Footscray police operation

Footscray Police conducted an operation around Highpoint Shopping Centre on Friday, July 7.

The operation ran from 1pm – 9pm, during which police conducted operation Tanami.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the operation was focused on deterring and detecting crime, detecting people wanted on warrants or whereabouts and engaging with the local community.

Local uniform police set up a mobile police facility and were joined by members from the Proactive Policing Unit, Transit police and Westgate Highway Patrol utilising Automatic Number Plate Recognition Technology(ANPR) to detect people and vehicles of interest, including unregistered cars, unlicenced drivers or stolen cars, while uniform police conducted roving patrols targeting car parks on the lookout for suspicious activity.

Key statistics from the operation included vehicle checks, arrests and infringements, with over 2310 vehicles checked and 21 intercepted.

One youth was arrested in relation to an alleged shop steal and was issued with a caution by police.

Another person was charged on summons for driving while suspended.

Police issued 14 infringement notices for traffic offences and made 622 public contacts.

According to the police spokesperson, local police will continue to regularly run operations such as these across a variety of busy community locations to detect and deter criminal and anti-social behaviour.
