A new musical partnership has been created between Songlines Aboriginal Music Corporation and Victoria University (VU) Music .
This new duo has resulted in a series of free live music events that aim to celebrate the diverse talents of First Nations and student musicians from the west.
VU agency manager Sherry Rich Plant said the series ‘Voices From the Heart’ is a testament to the upcoming referendum.
“I have partnered with Robbie Bundle Songlines chief executive, to create a song together that we will perform at the last event,” she said.
“Robbie happens to be a fantastic musician, so this song titled, ‘Voices of heart’, is very special.
“Robbie had very strong feelings about the whole series as it refers to the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
“…As well as with the referendum coming up, we just want to get the message out that people should use their voice and vote.”
The remaining two free sessions are to be run at Kindred Bandroom in Yarraville, on Thursday, August 24 and Thursday, September 21, made possible through The Westgate Neighbourhood Fund.
Sherry said the first two sessions were a great success which left everyone excited for the next.
“Those sessions went really well, both Songlines artists and VU artists performed several sets on the night.
“They played a wide range of genres from country, soul, funk, dance, singer songwriter, country rock , hip hop , reggae to power pop and jazz.”
Some artists to appear on August 24, are Leilani LeFleur, Canisha and Brett ‘Pirritu’ Lee.
Leilani is a graduate with a the VU Music Degree, and is now a professional musician performing with a band who move between funk, jazz and pop.
