Maribyrnong councillors will elect a new mayor at a special meeting tonight. Current mayor Grant Miles will not be recontesting the position.

Protesters slam refugee policy

More than 500 Maribyrnong voters have signed an open letter to Opposition Leader and Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten accusing him of harming asylum seekers. Co-signed by more than 60,000 Australians, the letter accuses the government and opposition of deliberately pursuing policies known to cause severe mental and physical health problems for asylum seekers.

Stonemason jobs boost

A Brooklyn business making products out of natural and engineered stone has been awarded a $250,000 state government technology grant. SWC Management will buy advanced machinery and technology to lift productivity, creating 19 jobs and boosting exports sales by $100,000.

Diwali to light up Laverton

Diwali, India’s most important holiday of the year, will be celebrated at Laverton Community Hub on Saturday from noon to 4pm, with traditional games and cultural programs, Indian food, lantern-making and crafts.
