Dinosaur Mimi is the star BiGfiSh at Yarraville hub

Rumours of dinosaur sightings in the inner-west have been confirmed with the public unveiling of ‘Mimi’ the Muttaburrasaurus.

The 6-metre-long, 3-metre-high dinosaur created by Footscray artists at BiGfiSh is the star attraction at a new dinosaur-themed playground opening in McNish Avenue, Yarraville, this Saturday.

The playground was funded by Medibank and created with the support of Maribyrnong council.

Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said the innovative playspace would be treasured by local children for ages to come.

“The city of Maribyrnong has some great parks, gardens and playgrounds and we’re proud to welcome ‘Mimi’ to our city,” he said.

“Mimi is the best thing we’ve seen since the Cretaceous era.”

The Muttaburrasaurus was a herbivorous dinosaur that lived in northern Australia more than 100 million years ago.

Mimi’s home is in front of the Clare Court Children’s Hub.

Medibank chief customer officer Laz Cotsios said he hoped Mimi encouraged local children to lead healthier and more active lives.

The playground will be officially launched with a community day from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, September 13.

Festivities will include free kids activities such as face painting and food and free copies of a specially created Mimi children’s book.
