Family evacuates Williamstown townhouse fire

Thirty firefighters tackled a blaze which engulfed a two-storey townhouse in Williamstown overnight.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 10.15pm to find smoke and flames leaping from the townhouse.

A family of two adults and one child and a pet dog were safely evacuated from the Station Street property.

In total, 30 firefighters and 11 appliances were used to battle the blaze. The fire was deemed under control at 10.49pm.

The top floor and roof were extensively damaged by fire. The ground floor was smoke and water-damaged.

FRV specialist fire investigators were on scene Tuesday morning to determine the cause of the blaze.

A community alert was issued for smoke in the area.
