Vivid colours and themes of native flora and fauna now welcome children attending playgroup at the South Kingsville Community Centre.
A mural commissioned as part of Hobsons Bay council’s street art project was recently completed, wrapping the Paxton Street building in a vibrant range of images and designs.
The South Kingsville Community Centre (SKCC) was one of six locations across Hobsons Bay selected for the street art program with the aim of brightening and activating the buildings and their surrounds.
According to SKCC manager Alexandra Jedlicko, it’s an aim their new mural has already achieved.
“The mural provides children with an opportunity to learn more about native animals and parents are particularly fond of the way the colours uplift the centre,” Ms Jedlicko said.
“The wider community have also given us plenty of positive feedback about how the artwork improves the centre’s street appeal.”
The mural is the work of Footscray based artists Jess Wilson and Lynn Bremner and took a month to complete, with 12 separate days for painting and the rest for drying.
The design incorporates the style of both artists while also being informed by extensive community consultation and engagement with Bunurong Land Council.
Next month Wilson and Bremner will host a mural workshop for children at SKCC to coincide with its 30th birthday.
The workshop and birthday celebrations will take place at the centre on Friday, October 4, with more information available at skcc.net.au.
Other murals painted as part of the Hobsons Bay street art project are located at Veron Street, South Kingsville, Blyth Street, Altona, Second Avenue Groer Wall, Altona North, Little Rosbery Cafe in Altona Meadows and on the corner of Challis Street and Wood Street in Newport.
